The Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival began today and I have to say, there have already been some pret-ty impressive Red Carpet looks. I've actually liked every single one I've seen so far! Here are some outfits from tonight's The Ides of March premiere:

Vittoria Puccini
I. Am. Speechless.

Marisa Tomei
I don't know if I love that necklace detail, but it definitely makes the outfit interesting and original. And I do love the color and the simple design of the dress.

Diane Kruger
Does Diane ever get it wrong?
I'll admit that I prefer the runway version of the dress, but she still looks remarkable.

Bianca Brandolini D'Adda
Gooooooooorgeous!

Evan Rachel Wood
This dress isn't remotely boring, but the shooooes - the shoes are another story. All in all though, cool outfit!

Best and Worst Dressed at the VMAs 2011

Worst Dressed
When I said that Kim Kardashian's Kaufman Franco dress looked terrible, I had no idea how terrible! It was even worse from behind:

I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate illusion netting. If you're gonna show your back, then show your back! This just looks unnatural. And then it wrinkles and looks even more unnatural or like you have the skin of a 70-year-old; I don't even know which is worse. At least she had her hair out so that you couldn't see where the fabric started in the neck; that's a plus.

Adele in Burberry Prorsum. I've actually seen this on a lot of Best Dressed lists, but I think it's one of the worst outfits from the VMAs; it's so boring. I love Adele, but I don't love anything about this outfit. Even her hair is horrible.

Speaking of boring.... Katie Holmes in an Azzedine Alaia dress and Proenza Schouler boots. And besides being boring, those shoes are so wrong for the occasion.

Deena Nicole Cortese. I don't even know where to begin. Hair, makeup, accessories, dress - it's all equally horrible.

JoJo in Marco Marco (haha, just that in itself sounds funny). First of all, I didn't even know she still had a career?! I had basically forgotten she existed. And second of all, this is so ugly. It looks like she has giant wings sticking out from her hips. Yes, fly away, please; I don't ever want to see this again.

At least Nicki Minaj' outfit was fun and inventive. She gets an A for effort.

Rebecca Black in a Theory jacket and Louboutin heels. I didn't know Louboutins could actually look bad, but apparently they can. The whole outfit is so matchy-matchy it makes me wanna puke.

"Gucci Gucci" singer Kreayshawn. Could she at least have worn heels????

If you read this blog, you know how much I love sequins, but this sequined D&G jacket is horrible (at least combined with that). I've seen this on a lot of Best Dressed lists too, but I just didn't like it at all.

Oh, Snooki is on a Worst Dressed list, what a suprise!

Best Dressed
I posted some of those looks last night during the show (here), but you can see the outfits more clearly in these photos:

Selena Gomez, who hosted the pre-show, looked stunning in Julien MacDonald. Maybe a little too sophisticated for the VMAs, but I don't care, I love this!

1. Katy Perry arrived in a super cute Atelier Versace dress. This is just so VMAs-appropriate and fun and original and amazing. She looks so adorable it almost makes me like her hair.

2. Later, she accepted an award in a Christian Dior ensemble, Guiseppe heels and a Philip Treacy, uhm, cheese cube hat (?). I have to admit, her hair actually looks really good with this outfit.

3. Then she opted for a more "mature" Tom Ford dress.

4. And in the press room at the end of the show she wore a Johnny Wujek dress and another pair of Guiseppe heels.

Kelly Rowland in a Falguni & Shane peacock dress. I feel like the 'peacock' theme is getting old, but she does look great...

Beyoncé arrived in a beautiful Lanvin dress. This is definitely one of my favorites of the evening!

At first I was a little conflicted about this outfit, and I'm sure it'll end up on many Worst Dressed lists as well, but I just think it looks great on her. Jessie J has just the right amount of attitude to pull this off and she managed to look cool despite a broken leg, which, obviously, isn't the easiest thing to do.

Zoe Saldana in Barbara Bui. It was a pretty safe and very typical-Zoe-Saldana choice, but I still like it. And the shoes and accessories are perfect.

Fashion at the VMAs - so far

Watching MTV Video Music Awards! So many lovely outfits:

Zoe Saldana
Selena Gomez
Beyoncé (who just announced she's pregnant!!)
Taylor Lautner
Kelly Rowland
Katy Perry (and Russell Brand)

Other interesting outfits:

Nicki Minaj. Not a very practical outfit, I could barely hear
what she was saying when she was being interviewed.
Justin Bieber. I don't know about this. I don't get why he always dresses like a hip hop artist, well, at least
when it comes to accessories. His rings are huge. What do you think about those glasses? I can't decide...
Kim Kardashian. No, I think this dress looks terrible on her. Or just terrible, period.
Miley Cyrus. Again, I'm conflicted. I like the fact that she chose a long, sophisticated dress, but I feel like
there's something I don't like here (the print, probably). Hm, yeah, I have to think about that for a while.
Britney Spears (and Jason Trawick). I might have liked this if she hadn't worn a belt...

Best and Worst Dressed of the Week

I thought I'd post my 'Best and Worst Dressed of the Week' list before the VMAs, because there have already been so many outfits that I've loved (and hated) this week, and I bet there'll be maaaany more after tonight's show, so I'll probably just make a separate 'Best Dressed at the VMAs' list. Aaah, can't wait to see what everyone's wearing!

 Best Dressed
Anne Hathaway in Alexander McQueen
Fergie in Balenciaga
Olivia Palermo in Tibi
Zoe Saldana in Valentino
Rihanna in Yves Saint Laurent
Worst Dressed
Rose McGowan
Paz de la Huerta
Katherine Heigl
Anne Hathaway
Sarah Michelle Gellar
What amazes me is that there were actually five people this week who managed to look worse than Melody Thornton. How is that even possible?!

Hit or miss?

I was working on my 'Best Dressed of the Week' list and realized that I really didn't know if I loved or hated this outfit:

Zoe Saldana at at screening of her new movie Columbiana in Miami earlier this week (right)
The embroidered details on the dress are so, so, so, so amazing that I really want to love this. And the deep V-neck looks incredible on Zoe and the dress fits her perfectly; I love the shape of it.

What I don't like is that white train. It really ruins the outfit for me. But I could almost have accepted the train if it weren't for that white "line" that goes all the way around her - what the hell?! And those black sandal-like shoes were such a weird choice.

But I can't say that I love the model's outfit either. Because then it's the belt that ruins it for me. It should've been Zoe's deep V-neck, no belt, no train and the model's shoes (or just standard black or white Louboutins). Aaah, just thinking about how perfect this outfit would be if those small details were changed makes me want to cry.

Gaga's clothing line

I have to admit, I'm very excited about this clothing line Lady Gaga is doing with her sister. According to Grazia, Gaga is set on taking classic looks from Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn and Grace Kelly while still mixing them with her own style (Aaaah, sounds amazing!!). But, and this is a big but, the line is apparently going to be "relatively normal and wearable" so that's good. Well, at least I think that's good. I don't want it to be too normal though - that's just boring. It's like Mary-Kate and Ashley's t-shirts: how can two people with such great style design clothes that are so utterly boring? So hopefully Gaga's will still be original and fun, but I mean, it's Lady Gaga; how "normal" clothes is she really capable of making?

Nothing has been confirmed or denied by the sisters, but Grazia seems like a pretty reliable source, so I think it's happening. God I hope so!

Which of Gaga's looks would you like them to draw inspiration from? Here are some memorable outfits:

At the 2010 Brit Awards. Gown by Francesco Scognamiglio. Lace mask by Philip Treacy
At the hilarous Jonathan Ross' talk show wearing Giorgio
Armani Prive and a telephone hat designed by Philip Treacy.
At Marc Jacob's Spring 2010 after-party.
At the 2010 Grammys. All outfits designed by Giorgio Armani.
At the 2009 MuchMusic Awards.
Wearing a fur Mouton Collet toque and a molded silicone dress from Rachael Barrett.
This is what she wore when she met Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance in London.
This is one of my favorite Gaga outfits. I remember when I saw this for the first time and I was just blown away by how artistic and beautiful it was. This is a regal gown from Alexander McQueen's namesake line and Gaga arrived at the 2010 VMAs in it.
Haus of Gaga
At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Gaga had six costume changes. To the left is a sheer vintage Alexander McQueen, in the middle is a Haus of Gaga crown and to the right is a Jean Paul Gaultier sculpted one-piece.
At the 2010 amfAR New York Gala. Bikini and jacket by Haus of Gaga
This creation she loved so much that she tried it in two colors.
Yes, this is hair. Human hair. It was designed by Charlie le Mindu for a performance in Paris.
This is what she wore during her 2009 appearance on SNL. The
metal creation rotated around her during her performance.
